d. Senior men and women living in the Northeast
e. African American men living in the Northeast
f. Non-Hispanic white men and women living in the Southeast

Answer to Question 7

Correct Answer:

b. African American men and women living in the Southeast

Additional Information:

African American men and women living in the Southeast have the highest death rate from stroke nationally. The areas in which stroke death is particularly common include Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington DC (collectively called the 'Stroke Belt'). Presumably many different factors including income levels, diet, access to preventive, emergency, and long-term healthcare, local knowledge and beliefs all contribute to this statistic. Whites living in these areas have a somewhat increased incidence of stroke as well, but African Americans are much more likely both to have a stroke and to die from it.
