Alfred P. Sloan Award for Faculty Career Flexibility

UMass Medical School was one of five medical schools nationally to receive a $250,000 grant in 2012 for its innovative work in career flexibility for academic faculty from the American Council on Education (ACE) and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Two schools received $25,000 awards. The grants reward medical schools demonstrating promising practices that provide unbiased opportunities for work–life balance.

The UMMS accelerator plan focuses on a central theme of faculty talent management: an institutionally integrated approach to support the needs of faculty throughout their careers through proactive and innovative faculty development and flexibility programs, policies and practices. A office of faculty talent management was established to connect faculty with resources through a program of customized individual support.

Other linked initiatives included standard guidelines that allow for customization of part-time employment and phased retirement policies to meet individual and departmental goals, expanded opportunities for faculty mentoring and programs for faculty vitality. Toward the end of the grant period, UMMS and partnering institutions convened a national conference titled Career Flexibility for Biomedical Fauclty of Today and Tomorrow: A National Conference to accelerate the dissemination of successful strategies for faculty flexibility and talent management.  For information on the Career Flexibility for Biomedical Fauclty of Today and Tomorrow: A National Conference held March 14-15, 2015, see the NENFA website here.
