Dr. Wilkie was born and raised in Massachusetts, completing her medical school training at UMass Chan Medical School and residency at Brigham and Women’s/Massachusetts General Hospital. She then returned to UMass to complete her fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. We are thankful we were able to recruit her to remain on as faculty after fellowship. She is a physician-scientist dedicated to improving the cardiometabolic health of pregnant patients through research and is passionate about medical education.

Dr. Whelan joined us after her fellowship in MFM at Women and Infants Hospital. She has been dedicated to improving mental health research since she was an undergraduate. Her recent work focuses on patient-centered outcomes, including experience of control over pregnancy and labor as a mechanism for increased risk for postpartum mental health conditions, with specific focus on “Health at Every Size” framework for medical care. She is currently training for a half marathon to raise money for preeclampsia awareness. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with family and friends.

Dr. Sverdlov joined us from Tufts University, straight from MFM fellowship. She is a passionate educator and has an interest in ultrasound, diagnostic procedures, and fetal medicine. She leads our fellowship ultrasound conference once a month with the faculty and fellows. When she is not seeing patients or educating, she can be found in orchestral concert, playing the violin. She has two children, who share her passion for music.

Dr. Leftwich was born and raised in Worcester, Massachusetts, though she did all of her training outside of the state. She completed her fellowship at the University of Illinois and has been at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical school since fellowship. She has a passion for education, mentorship and research, reflective in her leadership role as the Chair of the SMFM Education committee and current UMass Chan Medical School Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship Program Director. She has established research collaborations with partners in Kenya and has a significant interest in studying hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, specifically preeclampsia. Outside of work, she enjoys family time with her husband and two girls which includes travel, concerts, and a new love for skiing.

Dr. Kanter did his fellowship at Magee Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA and joined us at UMass Chan in 2012. He serves as the Co-Director for our ultrasound unit and works to improve access and patient satisfaction in the unit. He is passionate about fetal diagnosis and quality improvement. Additionally, he is the director of our resident high-risk clinic and enjoys teaching the residents about pregnancy complications.

Dr. Johnson did all of her medical training in Boston, although grew up primarily in Honolulu, Hawaii. Figuring out the best way to help a patient understand a diagnosis and treatment plan, while also remaining sensitive to the emotional nature of receiving bad or uncertain news, remains one of the most challenging, yet rewarding, feats she navigates daily. As an educator, she loves sharing her fascination with pregnancy and its complications with trainees, and thus loves working in an academic institution. Her research interests include periviable birth, hypertension management, global health, and patient-provider communication (especially shared-decision making!)

I was born and raised in Massachusetts, with a few stints out of state for training. Having practiced in both faculty practice and private practice in Boston for 13 years, I transitioned to UMass in 2019 and have been here ever since. I completed my Masters in Business Administration during the pandemic and enjoy applying this training to medicine. As the Medical Director of the UMass Memorial Medical Center Maternity Center, I am heavily involved in policy and organization and a number of quality improvement projects in obstetrics. I am also dedicated to education and mentoring with the medical school and love teaching. My clinical interests are related to ultrasound and prenatal diagnostic testing. Outside of medicine I enjoy cooking, wood working, carpentry, quilting, skiing, hockey, and sailing.

Dr. Dumont grew up in New England. She did her training in Pennsylvania, though always planned to come back home. Her career journey has taken multiple twists from time as a volunteer doula, to graduate work in Cell and Molecular Biology, to her current interest in Clinical Informatics. She enjoys the varied aspects of maternal and fetal care and aims to optimize technology in providing the best care to our patients. She can also share this passion with the MFM fellows as they grow their prenatal clinics as a first year.

Dr. Delpapa is the Division Chief of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at UMass Memorial Health/UMass Chan Medical School and has been an MFM attending at UMass Memorial Health for over 30 years. She was the inaugural MFM Fellowship Program Director and was a significant part of its creation. She has a passion for labor and delivery, as well as for education. She teaches small group sessions at the medical school. When Dr. Delpapa is not working, she loves to travel and spend time with family, including her new grandson!

Hi, I’m Allison Bitto. I grew up in North Reading, Massachusetts and attended Boston University (BU) for my undergraduate degree. I studied Human Physiology and Psychology at BU and worked as an Emergency Medical Technician. I moved to New York City after college to attend Columbia University where I received my BSN and MSN. After completing my degree as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, I worked in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility for 2 years before moving back to the Boston area. I worked at Lowell Community Health Center for over 6 years in the OB/GYN department. I have a passion for women’s health and high-risk obstetric care, which led to my interest in working in the MFM division. In my free time, I love to travel and spend time by the ocean with my friends and family. I enjoy swimming and scuba diving, especially in Curacao.

Petra Belady, MD

Dr. Belady has been at UMass Chan for 18 years and serves as the Co-Director of the ultrasound unit, working on patient experience and workflow. In this role, she also serves as the physician liaison for retention and hiring of staff. As the OB/GYN department’s Wellness Co-Director, she is instrumental in elevating physician and trainee wellness in every conversation and decision, and champions and models the importance of this balance. She has a clinical interest in fetal diagnosis and is the Co-Director of the Fetal Specialty Clinic, servicing our pregnant patients carrying pregnancies with diagnosed fetal complications. She has been instrumental in the design of this clinic, helping to improve the experience for patients. Outside of work, Dr. Belady loves connecting with people and enjoys spending quality time with family and friends.
