Machine Shop

PLEASE NOTE THE MACHINE SHOP IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED

For this interim period, the following 2 Machine Shops are recommended for your use.    Please mention that you are a UMASS employee when you call as both Shops have been pre-screened.    We welcome feedback on work generated by both locations for future planning purposes.

  • The UMMS Machine Shop is a support service dedicated to assisting research in a technical/mechanical manner.  Although all types of basic laboratory apparatus are manufactured and repaired on a regular basis, we specialize in design and fabrication of equipment that is not commercially available. No job too big or too small, too simple or too complex.

Our staff is experienced and knowledgeable in working with all plastics and composites, all metals and alloys.  We have over 35 years combined of experience in biomedical design and machining experience and are always available to discuss projects either at the shop or at your location.

The Machine Shop is located at the Shrewsbury Campus. Pick-up and delivery of jobs can be arranged at your convenience.

    Process

Typically, the shop develops products based solely on the researcher's ideas or concepts. This is accomplished by first meeting with lab personnel and taking specific measurements and notes.

An accurate three-dimensional image is then created utilizing solid modeling computer software.

From this model, a blueprint type line drawing is produced for machining purposes.
