General Obstetrics & Gynecology

The Division of General Obstetrics & Gynecology is the largest division of the UMass faculty group. It currently includes 15 providers, including 11 MDs and 5 nurse practitioners. The Generalist division’s missions include providing comprehensive care to women across the reproductive age span, within the discipline of obstetrics and gynecology, a commitment to the educational mission of the University of Massachusetts Medical with involvement in the medical student and resident curriculums of the institution and participation in ongoing clinical research of women’s health care. Providers have extensive experience with a full range of surgical care and continue to expand their skills to continue to provide evolving care options.

The division’s faculty see patients in two ambulatory settings. One is located on the Memorial campus of UMass Memorial Medical Center, providing a convenient link to the services or the Maternity Unit and the larger institution. On-site obstetric and gynecologic ultrasound is available to patients. Complementing our clinical practices, the division provides consultative services to Family Medicine practices in the region, and family planning services at Planned Parenthood in Worcester.

Within the division, providers have a wide variety of interests within women’s health. Expertise is available in the management of cervical dysplasia and abnormal Pap smears, abnormal uterine bleeding, uterine fibroids, and adnexal masses, menopause, and complex contraceptive care. A unique collaboration with the Department of Pediatrics and Pediatric Surgery will enhance the patient care available for adolescents. More recent, expanding areas of interest include laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery techniques and hysteroscopic procedures.

A major educational responsibility of the division’s members is Obstetric and Gynecology resident teaching in the residency’s ambulatory clinic, Community Women’s Care on the Memorial campus of the UMass Memorial Medical Center. Generalist faculty provide supervision and teaching in general obstetrics and gynecology and oversee the colposcopy referral clinic. Resident education is ever-present with resident involvement in nearly every aspect of patient care at UMass Memorial. Each provider mentors medical students and provides exposure to the practice of obstetrics and gynecology during their clinical rotation in Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Clinical research and community outreach complete the division’s focus on the care needs of women in the Central Massachusetts communities and beyond. Investigations into weight gain in pregnancy, depression in pregnancy, and postpartum exercise, and prevention of weight retention after pregnancy are among the studies and programs underway. The division also strives to improve patient care with easier access, better patient education, and more convenience with continued attention to patient care needs.
