Division of Hospital Medicine
The Division of Hospital Medicine was begun in July of 1996 at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. It was one of the first hospitalist programs developed at a major teaching hospital in the United States. With the affiliation of UMMC and the Memorial Hospital to form UMass Memorial Medical Center, the size and scope of the hospitalist practice were greatly expanded. Due to the success and immediate positive impact the division had at the main campuses, the scope of our division has expanded greatly.
Today, the division of Hospital Medicine is one of the largest divisions in the Department of Medicine, and among the largest Divisions of Hospital Medicine in the United States, comprising more than 70 clinical full time equivalents. In addition to the Hospital Medicine’s successful clinical enterprise our scope has been expanded to include a vibrant research and educational program.
