Academic Job Search series

CV/Cover Letter Exchange
Wednesday, August 2, 2017 | 11 a.m.-12 p.m. | Suite S1-824 - GSBS Conference Room

Bring 3 copies of your CV and cover letter to this "Exchange" to get feedback from your peers and from facilitator Dr. Cynthia Fuhrmann.  This is an opportunity to learn from others--by providing feedback on their materials and by receiving feedback on your own. Application materials are welcome for any academic postitions-- faculty, postdoctoral, etc.  Dr. Fuhrmann will draw out themes for how to strengthen your materials based on examples brought to the Exchange.

This is a discussion-based session designed to be a follow-up to the June 22 workshop (attendance to the prior workshop is not required). Participants are asked to keep each others' materials and feedback confidential (application copies are for in-classroom review, and then will be returned to their original owner).

Part 3: Preparing for the Interview Visit
Thursday, August 31, 2017 | 2 p.m.-3:30 p.m. | Hiatt Auditorium - Room S1-608

What can you expect during an interview for a faculty position in the sciences? How can you most effectively prepare? From the initial interview invitation to the phone interview, on to the job talk, chalk talk, (perhaps teaching talk,) and in-person interviews... In this workshop, you will learn strategies for each component of the academic interview process.

Part 4: Negotiating Your Faculty Startup Package
Thursday, August 31, 2017 | 3:30 p.m.-5 p.m. | Hiatt Auditorium - Room S1-608

Though you may simply want to celebrate, receiving a faculty job offer begins the last, crucial stage of the academic job search: negotiation. Whether you receive one or multiple offers, it is important to critically evaluate both the fit of the institution and the offer itself. In almost all cases you will want to negotiate to ensure that you have the resources necessary for success in the professional and personal aspects of your life. In this workshop, you will learn what can be negotiated for, and a step-wise approach for how to do so in a professional manner.

Parts 3 and 4 of this series are held back-to-back.  This is designed so that you can attend one or stay for both. We will have a break roughly in-between.  The workshop on negotiation will begin no earlier than 3:30 p.m.
