For nearly 25 years, Robert Layne, MEd, has worked with Worcester public schools to create opportunities for underrepresented students to learn more about health care careers, fulfilling a mission of the UMass Medical School.
“I always tell students, ‘You have nothing to lose. Try it!’” said Layne, assistant dean for outreach programs and instructor in radiology, during a Voices of UMassMed podcast about the Worcester Pipeline Program.
Marian Younge, a fourth-year medical student who graduates in June, credits her experience in the program with helping her navigate the path to becoming a doctor. In the podcast, Younge said she knew she wanted to enter the health care field, and the opportunities and exposure she had through UMMS gave her the tools to succeed.
“Through partnerships that UMass offered, I was actually able to get involved in an internship program here during my senior year where I got to meet some physicians and different health professionals working in primary care,” Younge explained. “That’s something that I wouldn’t have had much access to.”
