2012 Winter Ball a cause for celebration
The Hanover Insurance Group Foundation signs on as event's first Platinum Sponsor
Another year, another festive and successful Winter Ball fundraising event! On Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, more than 350 members of the Central Massachusetts community gathered at Mechanics Hall in Worcester to celebrate—and support—the shared mission of UMass Medical School (UMMS) and UMass Memorial Medical Center.
As in years past, attendees participated in both live and silent auctions to raise funds for this vital academic medical center. “Having the enthusiastic support of so many leaders in our community is extraordinary and demonstrates clearly the value placed on these two dynamic organizations and the impact they have on our communities,” said R. Norman Peters, Esq., chair of the Winter Ball 2012 Steering Committee, who is also a member of the University of Massachusetts Board of Trustees and a member of the UMass Medicine Development Council.
Attendees also fervently supported that year’s fund-a-need project: establishing an endowed scholarship at UMMS named for John O’Brien, president and CEO of UMass Memorial Health Care, who retired in early 2013.
“John O’Brien is a truly remarkable individual, someone who has long been an advocate for our community professionally, by providing quality health care for the people of our state, and personally, by supporting the academic goals of our young people,” said Mary DeFeudis, chair of the UMass Medicine Development Council, during the speaking program that evening. “His college education was made possible by the generosity of others. Therefore, he understands—all too well—the impact financial aid can have on students, enabling them to keep their focus where it should be: on learning.”
At the conclusion of a video (see below) describing the impact financial aid can have on future care givers and the future of medicine, Ms. DeFeudis announced that the scholarship would be named in honor of Mr. O’Brien to acknowledge his commitment for giving back.
UMMS Chancellor Michael F. Collins also acknowledged O’Brien’s efforts. “From the time I joined the Medical School in 2007, he has been an outstanding colleague and a great collaborator, and together, we have been able to create an exciting and ambitious future for our academic health sciences system,” he said. “It has been a great privilege to work with John in this regard and, on behalf of the entire Medical School, I thank him for his partnership.”
The Hanover Insurance Group Foundation, the first-ever platinum sponsor of the Winter Ball, was acknowledged for its support of the event as were gold sponsors Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Crothall Healthcare, Morrison Management Specialists and Vital Emergency Medical Services in collaboration with MedStar Ambulance. Overall, the event was enjoyed by all and exceeded expectations.
“We are thrilled with turnout for this year’s Winter Ball, both in terms of attendance and monies raised,” said Peters. “It has been a great privilege to be a part of this outstanding effort.”
