Pedal power on campus Oct. 29
For the positive impact on a person’s health and for reducing carbon emissions generated by commuting to campus in gas-powered vehicles, the Office of Sustainability is sponsoring a Bike Fair Tuesday Oct. 29.
The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the terrace in front of the main Medical School entrance and features the following:
- Landry's Bicycle Shop in Westborough will have several electric bicycles on display at the fair. Landry’s staff will answer questions about e-bikes and offer guided test rides around the campus.
- Worcester Earn-A-Bike (https://www.worcesterearnabike.org/), a local non-profit organization that teaches people bicycle repairs and maintenance as a way of helping them “earn” a bike from an inventory of donated bicycles will be at the fair. The group will hold a “fix-a-flat” clinic at and coordinate a bicycle parts swap at the fair.
- The Worcester Earn-A-Bike team will be accepting whole bicycle donations to support their mission. So, if you have bicycle at home that is not being used, you can bring it to campus and donate it that day.
- There will be informational tables about shared roadway safety and the status of transportation initiatives in Worcester.
“We have a growing group of bicyclists on campus, and we’ll continue to look for ways to support them and to encourage more people to consider bicycling as a regular means of transportation,” said Kortni Wroten, sustainability and energy manager at UMass Chan.
The Bike Fair will occur rain or shine. If it rains that day, however, the event will move into the Medical School lobby and there will be no test rides.
