Resident Biography

Katherine Bakke, MD, MPH

Chief Resident Year

Medical School

University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, Michigan

Hometown: Portland, Oregon

Undergrad Institution: Bryn Mawr College; BA in Religion

Medical School: University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, Michigan

Other degrees/information about them: Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health; MPH with focus in social and behavioral health

Future plans: Current dream is to complete a critical care fellowship, get a job practicing general surgery with the Indian Health Services in the Four Corners or work at a VA hospital for awhile, and then eventually be nominated to serve as the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator.

Why UMASS?: I felt like the program would embrace and support me for me, and not want to mold me into being any particular type of surgeon other than the kind I wanted to be.

Favorite thing to do in Worcester: Hard to choose! I enjoy going to Lou Roc’s diner post-call for the Fenway scramble, taking out of town visitors to Pomir Grill or Fatima’s Café (super good Afghani and East African food, respectively), hanging at dive bars like Vincent’s and Ralph’s during resident social hour, looking at all the unique wares at Crompton Collective, and exploring the varied architecture in different neighborhoods around town.
