NIH Public Access Policy

The Public Access Policy for submitting applicable manuscripts arising from NIH funds to PubMed Central (PMC) upon acceptance for publication that was previously voluntary under NOT-OD-05-022 - is now mandatory as of April 7th, 2008 per the revised policy NOT-OD-08-033. Compliance with this Policy is a statutory requirement and a term and condition of the grant award and cooperative agreement.

As of the May 25, 2008 due date and thereafter, NIH applications, proposals, and progress reports must include the PMC reference number when citing a manuscript that falls under the policy.  If the journal in which you publish deposits final articles for free access after 12 months or less, you do not need to do anything further.  This PMC Journal List is searchable.  If your journal takes more that 12 months to deposit or does not appear on the PMC Journal list - you will have to deposit it directly.   Publications can be deposited via the NIH Manuscript Submission System using your Commons username and password, and are reported in RPPR progress reports for NIH grants using the electronic MyNCBI online bibliography. Should you need help with MyNCBI or NIH Public Access Policy compliance, please fill out and submit this online request form.

Veteran's Administration Appointments - Memorandum of Understanding
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) requires that investigators with joint UMass Chan and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) appointments maintain a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that outlines the duties and effort to be committed at both the University and the VA.

UMass Chan has developed guidelines to assist investigators with this process. The guidelines and the MOU template are available below:
Veteran's Administration Memorandum of Understanding Guidelines
VA MOU Template
Please contact the Office of Sponsored Programs at research.funding@umassmed.edu if you have any questions about the VA MOU process.
