The MRI Fellowship Program at at UMass Chan Medical School provides comprehensive training in MRI and in the diseases affecting the nervous system, abdomen, chest and musculoskeletal systems, both in adult and pediatric patients. This is one of the few fellowships in the nation to offer MRI experience across all subspecialties. The goals of fellowship are twofold:
- a broad exposure to the use of MRI in different subspecialties.
- to provide knowledge of clinical MRI physics.
UMass Memorial Medical Center (UMMMC) is a 781-bed tertiary care hospital and the major teaching hospital for UMass Chan Medical School. UMMMC is Worcester County’s only Level I trauma center, comprehensive stroke center and the referral center for central New England. The Department of Radiology at UMass Memorial Medical Center performs over 1 million studies per year, across five hospitals and an outpatient imaging center. Current faculty in the department include 65+ fellowship trained Radiologists. The department has an enterprise wide PACS system (AGFA), as well as EPIC EMR. The hospital campuses and outpatient imaging center have 8 MRIs (including a GE Pioneer 3T system) and perform over 50,000 MR examinations in a year.

Rotations (in blocks of 4 weeks)
Neuroradiology: 16 weeks
Musculoskeletal radiology: 16 weeks
Body imaging and Cardiothoracic radiology: 16 weeks
Elective: 4 weeks
Minor modifications can be made to these rotations based on the fellow’s interests.
Call responsibility
Fellows take call with faculty for 1 week, every 4 weeks.
Academic time
24 days per year. Fellows may consolidate some of their academic time into blocks for specific projects.
Imaging Facilities and Locations
Primary location for the fellowship is UMass Memorial Medical Center, University campus. The fellows are in the University campus for most of the fellowship, and smaller amount of time in the outpatient imaging center.
- UMass Memorial Medical Center University Campus is located on Lake Avenue North and is home to the UMass Chan Medical School and its research facilities. This campus houses 2 magnets and provide 24/7 MR imaging services.
- UMass Memorial Medical Center Memorial Campus is the sister campus located a mile from the main University Campus and houses 1 magnet.
- UMass Memorial Medical Imaging Center (UMMIC) is our outpatient MRI center located on Shrewsbury Street just minutes from University and Memorial Campuses. It houses 1 3T and 2 1.5T MR systems.
- UMass Memorial Health Alliance-Clinton Hospital, with campuses in Clinton, Mass. and Leominster, Mass. The Leominster campus houses 1 magnet.
- UMass Memorial-Marlborough Hospital, Marlborough, Mass., houses 1 magnet.

Requirements:
Applicants must have completed a radiology residency program accredited by the ACGME by the time they begin their fellowship at UMMMC. Applicants must be certified or eligible for certification by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or equivalent. Acceptance is contingent on obtaining an unrestricted Massachusetts medical license by start date of Fellowship.
