WHISTLE Defense Program

This program is designed to help everyone on campus, in the Medical Center Community to take an active, yet safe part in reducing campus crime.

There are many benefits of a personal whistle. A whistle can be used to help aid in deterring or preventing crime on campus, and may be a call for help if you're lost, sick or injured. It can also be used to frighten away someone who means you harm, or alert those nearby to call the police.

The whistles are shrill, loud, safe, non-violent, and when carried on a key chain, cannot be used as a weapon against you. The whistles are given out to women throughout the Medical Center.

The whistles have the UMASS POLICE DEPARTMENT emergency phone number on the top to remind people that the POLICE will respond to your call for help.

Please use whistles only in emergency situations.
