Program in Molecular Medicine (PMM) administrative staff are committed to supporting faculty in their roles as scientists, teachers and University leaders to meet the Department’s goals in research, education, and training.  We help each other in labs and offices throughout the Department and University to create a productive, supportive, and collegial work environment. Funding Opportunities and Administration

Our team’s mission is to provide the PMM research community with outstanding pre- and post-award research administration services while ensuring the adherence to all applicable federal, state, University and sponsor guidelines.

What We Can Do For You

Proposal Development & Submission

    • Alert faculty and post docs to government, nonprofit and industry funding sources
    • Develop one to five-year budgets as well as proposal packages for public and private awards and agreements
    • Liaise with collaborators and their administrators to complete proposals with subawards/subcontracts
    • Facilitate proposal review by Research Funding Services
    • Serve as intermediary between faculty and the Office of Technology Management (OTM) regarding industry awards to vet agreements for budget and research compliance

Award Management

    • Provide financial projections and strategy advice on proper use of funds
    • Monitor subaward/subcontract budgets, including review and processing of invoices and coordinating with counterparts at collaborator institutions
    • Provide support to complete annual progress reports
    • Monitor payroll and consumable spending allocations
    • Maintain proposal documents including Other Support and Resources pages

Postdoctoral Fellowships and Career Development Awards

    • Assist post docs and junior faculty in submitting fellowship and career transition award proposals

Research Policy & Compliance

The PMM administrative staff is dedicated to supporting the faculty to achieve the research goals of the department by facilitating institutional compliance.

Institutional policy development and compliance is the responsibility of specialized offices/units that oversee specific areas including (but not limited to):

  • Financial Conflicts of Interest
  • Human and/or animal subjects in research
  • rDNA and Biological pathogens and hazards in research
  • Export controls
  • Laboratory and radiation safety
  • Radiation safety

The PMM administrative team fosters a community of compliance by acting as an active liaison between our faculty and staff and the responsible units for compliance.  We serve as a resource on laws, policies, and guidelines that pertain to a particular research project and advocate for our science in policy discussions with the University as well as representatives of our sponsors and state and local governments.

Departmental Operations

Program in Molecular Medicine administrative staff supports our faculty, researchers, staff and students in acquiring goods and services efficiently and secures the financial integrity of the Department. Operationally, we develop the annual budget, account for spending, implement accounting controls, coordinate purchases, expense and travel reimbursements, account for and document transactions, maintain systems access, and serve as liaison to internal and external suppliers.  We also act as primary contact for institutional administration and finance offices.

Additionally, we manage department events and shared communications, including scheduling conference rooms, and work with faculty and staff to manage phones, copiers, mail and other shared services and departmental resources.

What We Can Do For You

  • Corporate Card applications;
  • Conference room scheduling
  • ProCard statement retrieval and disbursement
  • Allocation/reallocation of ProCard expenses
  • Large equipment purchases, deliveries, returns
  • Expense reimbursement and payment processing

  • When to use Pcard or Corporate Card;
  • Financial systems access;
  • Non-payroll payment to individuals including health benefits, relocating expenses;

Human Resources & Personnel Management

We are dedicated to supporting faculty members to hire and manage temporary and permanent employees who support and carry out the PMM mission of research, education and training.  We develop and post positions, assist hiring managers with the interview and selection process including employee appointments and personnel actions, orient new hires, manage payroll and the performance evaluation processes, and provide guidance on applicable PMM and University human resources policies.

We also manage VISA processes for our international students, post docs and visiting research scholars.

Computing, Network & Web Services

The Program in Molecular Medicine (PMM) supports the Computing, Networking, Web Services and A/V service needs of our faculty and labs. Our mission is to advance the research, educational, and administrative goals of the department and encourage future opportunities by providing technical counsel and support the department with diligence, economy and accuracy.

What We Can Do For You

  • Website development and maintenance for the department and labs
  • Configuration, installation, diagnostics, troubleshooting and repair of computer hardware and periferals including software, network connectivity and technical support of computer-dependent lab equipment
  • “How to” help on all supported technologies
  • Audio/Visual (A/V) support
  • Assistance with data backup and recovery
  • Coordination/referral for all other IT services

Facilities Operations

The laboratories and facilities of the Program in Molecular Medicine (PMM) are located across the University of Massachusetts Medical School campus.  Scientific research is conducted in 20 to 25 labs occupying approximately XXX square feet.  Primary operations for the department are located in Biotech II.  Other crucial operations of the department are located in the Rose Reed Gordon building, located on the Maple Avenue campus in Shrewsbury and the Albert Sherman Center located on the main campus.  The laboratories of PMM employ more than 225 post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, associates and technicians and are supported by more than $18 million in sponsored grants and contracts.

The Facilities Manager oversees the maintenance of PMM facilities and the alteration and renovation needs of our laboratories.  In addition the Facilities Manager communicates with various university entities involved in the maintenance of buildings and facilities for all locations.
