Curriculum Overview for the Global Health Pathway (GHP)
Year 1 (FOM1) Foundations in Global Health Total: 20hrs
- Global Health Seminar Series: Foundations of Global Health (FGH): [10 hours]
- Between six and eight seminar sessions (each sessions is 90 minutes)
- Key concepts ant topics include: Millennium Development Goals, Ethics, Careers in global health, Social determinants of health, HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria.
- Global Health Speaker Series: [4 hours]
- GHP students will attend at least 3 of the speakers that give 60 to 90 minute talks as part of the Global Health Topics in Action elective.
- Longitudinal Preceptor Program (LPP): [as per the 1st year LPP]
- Community Engagement Program (CEP) and Patient Advocacy Program (PAP): [6 hours]
- GHP students learn about community organizations that work with refugees and immigrants who live in the Worcester area.
- GHP Students meet and learn from patients about the challenges facing immigrants and refugees.
- GHP students learn how to be advocates for immigrant, refugee and minority populations living in Massachusetts.
Summer between 1st and 2nd year
- Global Health Summer Experience: [6 weeks]
- 6-weeks spent applying the principals of global health either outside of the United States, or in the U.S. with immigrant and/or refugee populations
- GHP Students will give a poster presentation at the Global Health Poster Fair after their experience.
Year 2 (FOM2) Foundations in Global Health Total: 20hrs
- Global Health Seminar Series: Foundations of Global Health (FGH): [10 hours]
- Five sessions (each session is 60 to 90 minutes) on topics such as: Debriefing the Global Health Summer Experience, Planning a Capstone project in global health, Research in global health
- Community Engagement Program (CEP) and Patient Advocacy Program (PAP): [10 hours]
- Longitudinal Preceptor Program (LPP): [as per the 1st year LPP]
Year 3 (CCE) Core Clinical Experiences
- Flexible Clinical Elective (FCE): GHP students have the opportunity to do an FCE on a global health topic. FCE's typically are two-weeks long. There are FCEs that are pre-designed, while other FCEs can be designed by the student to fit their particular area of interest.
- Clinical rotations: During three of the required Year 3 clinical rotations (e.g., surgery, pediatrics, etc.) GHP students will complete and present one topic related to global health
Year 4 (AS) Advanced Studies
- Capstone project presentation: on a topic related to global health
- Global health elective: at a site outside the U.S. or in the U.S. serving refugee or immigrant populations
Years 1 to 4
- Global health journal club: GHP students learn from reading and discussing journal articles and reports related to global health topics.
- Global health service project: Each class of GHP students will engage in the planning and implementation of a global health service project.
- Language training: GHP students are highly encouraged to choose a non-English language to focus on throughout the 4 years.
- Capstone Project: GHP students will choose a Capstone project relevant to global health
- Serve as teachers & mentors to other students interested in global health: GHP students will have opportunities to act as mentors and teachers to students in previous years.
* Beginning in the 2013-2014 academic year, the Global Health Pathway is being expanded and restructured to include the above curriculum. The final curriculum may have small modifications from what is detailed above. The numbers of hours listed in this overview are approximations.
