Peers for Promotion: Facilitated Peer Mentoring for Assistant Professors

Peers for Promotion (PFP), sponsored by the UMMS Office of Faculty Affairs, is designed to help faculty advance and transition to the rank of Associate Professor.

The program is intended for faculty who have been an Assistant Professor for 5-11 years and would like to work on becoming an Associate Professor within the next two years.

Topics covered in Peers for Promotion address the components needed for the promotion package and for the successful transition to Associate Professor.

The Program

The Peers for Promotion program consists of four components:

  • a comprehensive curriculum that provides information for preparing documents    
    needed for promotion to Associate Professor and development of competencies useful 
    for transition to Associate Professor
  • interactive monthly group meetings providing discussion of the indvidual promotion 
     plan (IPP) and portfolio components; and peer-to-peer mentoring facilitated by Drs. 
     Judith K. Ockene and Joanna Cain
  • an individual Promotion Plan completed to identify gaps to promotion and a process 
     for filling gaps.
  • two individual consultations with Dr. Ockene or Dr. Cain

Time Commitment

The expected time commitment is 2 hours monthly for each group session and up to 2 hours monthly for work on your promotion portfolio.

The Peers for Promotion program runs from October 2016 - April 2017 for 7 sessions from 4:00-6:00pm on the following dates in Room S2-310:

  • 2016: October 27, November 10, and December 8
  • 2017: January 12, February 9, March 9, and April 13         

The Expectations

Participants are expected to attend 80% of the monthly group meetings, complete the promotion portfolio, and be committed to promotion. Schedule/Agenda AY 2016-2017.

The Promotion Portfolio

Using the IPP, Each participant will identify gaps in their promotion portfolio that need to be addressed in order to advance to the rank of Associate Professor. The identified gap(s) will be focused on and completed during the course of the program with the guidance of peers and senior faculty mentors.

Portfolio items include:

  • the narrative statement
  • an effective CV
  • reference letters
  • teaching evaluations
  • research or scholarly activities
  • clinical / professional service
  • establishing a national or international presence

The Mentoring Relationship

Mentoring is an essential component of the Peers for Promotion. Two senior faculty mentors will facilitate the group sessions and provide participants with guidelines for peer to peer mentoring and promotion.

The Application and Participation

Each eligible Assistant Professor, interested in participating, completes a brief application describing career goals and how participation in the Peers for Promotion: Facilitated Peer Mentoring program will assist with advancement to Associate Professor.

The applicant meets with their Department Chair or Division Chief to discuss the time commitment involved in participating in the program. Department Chairs or Chiefs must support the faculty member’s participation by signing the application.
