Reinstatement of indoor mask mandate (May 12)

Effective immediately, all employees, students and visitors are required to wear a surgical mask while inside all Medical School buildings. The reinstatement of the indoor mask requirement will remain in effect until the end of May and is aligned with UMass Memorial’s requirement that masks be worn in non-clinical areas.

We are taking this step to protect members of our academic community amid the rising number of COVID-19 cases statewide, in Worcester County and on our campus.

Surgical masks will continue to be available at the lobby entrance of each building, and while some individuals may elect to wear KN95 or N95 masks, please note that cloth masks are not permitted.

While the indoor mask mandate remains in effect, please remember that masks may be removed only

  • if you are alone in your office with the door closed;
  • if you are alone in a cubicle and at least six feet away from others; or
  • as briefly as possible while eating and physically distanced from others.

If you are not feeling well, please do not come to campus and consult your health care provider as needed. Our campus guidelines regarding what to do if you have COVID-19 symptoms or test positive for COVID-19 can be found at this link.

When working in clinical settings, clinical faculty, residents, fellows and students should follow the PPE and infection control guidelines specific to that given facility.

For more than two years, your adherence to important health and safety measures have allowed our campus community to conduct vital mission-based work while maintaining a safe and effective learning and working environment, and we thank you for your continued cooperation.
