Ronald Epstein, MD, a family physician and teacher of mindful practice in medicine, will be giving a talk and book signing for his book Attending: Medicine, Mindfulness and Humanity on May 16. The event, which is sponsored by the Lamar Soutter Library, will take place in the Faculty Conference Room. There will be a reception from 5:30 to 6 p.m., with the talk following from 6 to 7 p.m. Books will be available for purchase at the event and at the campus bookstore in advance of the event.
Dr. Epstein, professor of family medicine, psychiatry, oncology and medicine (palliative care) at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry, describes his talk as focusing on “the inner lives of physicians and other health professionals, specifically, how we can attend to and focus on what matters the most, adopt attitudes of curiosity and beginner’s mind when encountering surprises and difficulties, and cultivate presence and deep listening. It will also focus on how health care institutions must change to support healing relationships, humanism, quality of care and sustainability of the health care workforce.”
