New podcast: Mireya Wessolossky explains research into infectious disease

Infectious disease expert Mireya Wessolossky, MD, has been practicing in the United States for 20 years, and in that time, she has seen much progress in the treatment of emerging infectious diseases, such as HIV.

“I have been here since the HIV epidemic started in the late ‘80s, when I started in medical school, and I remember in microbiology learning about this virus and it was kind of mysterious,” said Dr. Wessolossky, associate professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Immunology, in new Voices of UMassMed podcast.

“I started seeing all the medication coming slowly through ’96 when I was doing my fellowship. It was a turning point where it became no longer a death sentence. I started seeing patients living longer and longer, and I have patients that have been with me since then.”

Wessolossky said the most common infectious diseases affecting Central Massachusetts are HIV, meningitis and hepatitis.
