The School of Medicine class size at UMass Medical School has grown by nearly a third in the past four years, with 161 students in the Class of 2022, and it received nearly 4,000 applications to fill those seats, according to an article in the Worcester Business Journal on Aug. 27.

Terence R. Flotte, MD, the Celia and Isaac Haidak Professor of Medical Education, executive deputy chancellor and dean of the School of Medicine, told WBJNews Editor Grant Welker that UMMS is attracting an impressive student cohort, with an average grade-point average for incoming students this fall at 3.7, and admission test scores in the 90th percentile nationally.

"We may still have a physician deficit," Dr. Flotte said, speaking of the national physician shortage, "but we're trying to do our part to help try to fill the physician workforce."

David Ayers, MD, chair and professor of orthopedics & physical rehabilitation, said he received 650 applicants for five orthopedic residency seats.
