The Worcester District Medical Society and the Humanities in Medicine Committee of the Lamar Soutter Library are co-sponsoring a reading and book signing by James O’Connell, MD, author of Stories from the Shadows: Reflections of a Street Doctor on Wednesday, May 23.

Dr. O’Connell is the founding physician of the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program. He will share stories of his experience with homeless men, women and children, and speak about the humanity and courage of people who struggle to survive on the streets.

Since its founding in 1985, the mission of the program has remained the same: to provide or ensure access to the highest quality health care for all homeless people in the greater Boston area. Stories from the Shadows: Reflections of a Street Doctor was published in 2015 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Boston Health Care for the Homeless.

The event will take place Wednesday, May 23, beginning with the book signing at 5:30 p.m., followed by readings from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Faculty Conference Room. Books will be available for purchase.
