Toxicologist Dayne Laskey to present ‘The Medicine Garden: Bioactive Plants of the Past, Present and Future’

Lamar Soutter Library hosts presentation on medicinal plant uses in conjunction with Medicinal Flora of Massachusetts exhibit

Dayne Laskey, PharmD, will be at UMass Medical School on Tuesday, Aug. 22 to introduce the uses of medicinal plants and the evidence-based medicine garden he founded at the University of Saint Joseph School of Pharmacy in West Harford, Conn.

The presentation is part of the Lamar Soutter Library’s Medicinal Flora of Massachusetts exhibit, on display through Saturday, Sept. 30. The exhibit features medicinal plants found throughout the state, highlighting both their historical and modern uses as herbal remedies along with their sometimes deadly side effects.

Dr. Laskey is assistant professor of clinical toxicology at the University of Saint Joseph School of Pharmacy and a diplomate of the American Board of Applied Toxicology. In 2014, he founded the school’s Pharmacy Medicine Garden, which features a variety of medicinal plants from cultures around the world, many of them sources of modern pharmaceutical products.

In keeping with the expression, “The dose maketh the poison,” Laskey’s teaching philosophy focuses on rationalizing clinical scenarios pharmacologically and instilling a keen toxicology interest in each of his students. In addition to teaching, he practices clinical pharmacology in the Hartford Hospital Emergency Department.

Free and open to the public, the presentation will take place Tuesday, Aug. 22 from noon to 1 p.m. in Amphitheater I (S2-102).
