Suicide Prevention and Awareness Day is Sept. 7 at UMass Chan

UMass Medical School and the Department of Psychiatry will work to raise awareness and provide education about suicide prevention on Wednesday, Sept.7, in conjunction with National Suicide Prevention and Awareness Week and World Suicide Prevention Day.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon in the medical school lobby, with a short program at 11:30 a.m. The program continues from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Albert Sherman Center lobby. Barry Feldman, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry, and Kye Flotte are organizing the event.

There will be an informational display and suicide prevention and awareness ribbons distributed.

Each year, 42,773 Americans die by suicide, making it the 10thleading cause of death in the United States.  Of those, more than 6,000 are military veterans. Suicide has lasting impacts on individuals, families, friends and communities. Estimates indicate the number of survivors of suicide lossin the United States is more than 15 million.
