For their individual achievements in academic medicine and collective contributions to the advancement of women in science and health care, eight UMass Medical School faculty were honored at the annual Women’s Faculty Committee Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, May 11.

Hosted by the Office of Faculty Affairs and the Diversity & Equal Opportunity Office on behalf of the Women’s Faculty Committee, the event featured a keynote talk about civility in academic medicine from Lori Pbert, PhD, who in 2011 was the inaugural recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Advancing Institutional Excellence in Civility.

”Can we be civil and succeed in academic medicine?” asked Dr. Pbert, professor of medicine. “Yes, we can.”

After accepting this year’s Outstanding Mentor Award, Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs Luanne Thorndyke, MD, provided an update on promotions, granting of tenure and other recognition for women faculty in the past year.

“These numbers are very, very impressive,” said Dr. Thorndyke, professor of medicine, citing three new department chairs in basic and clinical science; two new deanships; two endowed chairs and a term chair; a Chancellor’s medal and a Chancellor’s award; numerous Faculty Scholar grants and Educational Recognition Awards; and 26 promotions to associate and full professorships, including three newly tenured professors.
