UMass Chan Cancer Walk to be held on Sunday

Money raised to support clinical trials, cancer research and care at UMass cancer center

Thousands of people from Central Massachusetts will participate in the 17th annual UMass Medicine Cancer Walk and 5K Run on Sunday, Sept. 27, to support clinical trials, cancer research and cancer care.

This year, a portion of the proceeds will also be used to fund a postdoctoral fellow who will undertake basic cancer research, according to Michael R. Green, MD, PhD, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator; the Lambi and Sarah Adams Chair in Genetic Research; chair and professor of molecular, cell & cancer biology and director of the UMass Medical School Cancer Center.

Last year, a competitive 5K run option was added to the traditional 5-mile walk around Lake Quinsigamond. The event also includes a survivors lap around the medical school quad with physicians and cancer researchers and a 1-mile walk around Regatta Park.

Registration is open for the walk and run up until Sunday morning. The run begins at 8 a.m.; the walk beings at 10 a.m. More information on course details and registration times can be found on the UMass Medicine Cancer Walk website: http://www.umassmed.edu/cancerwalk/.
