John R. Hayes, Jr. has been appointed vice chancellor for development for UMass Medical School and UMass Memorial Health Care, Chancellor Michael F. Collins has announced; Hayes has been serving on an interim basis since September. Also joining the development team in the new position of executive director of advancement will be Prescott D. Stewart, an experienced fundraiser from the Harvard Business School.

“With these two appointments, we are well-positioned in terms of fundraising strategy, resources and organization, all crucial to the future of our academic health sciences center and shared mission areas,” said Chancellor Collins.

As vice chancellor, Hayes will draw on his eight years of experience as a senior member of the development office and be responsible for creating an integrated and comprehensive advancement function, one that will capitalize on our demonstrable strengths in research, education, patient care, and community and global engagement. He will have direct oversight of and responsibility for the joint development program, with a specific emphasis on enhancing philanthropic giving at both UMMS and UMass Memorial.

“John’s work as interim vice chancellor over the past year made it apparent that he has the strategic vision, leadership qualities, management expertise and commitment to lead our advancement activities. Both Dr. Eric Dickson and I look forward to having John join the UMMS and UMass Memorial leadership teams on a permanent basis,” said Collins.

Hayes has held a series of increasingly responsible advancement roles, beginning with his fundraising work at the College of the Holy Cross, where he led the Holy Cross Fund; as associate vice chancellor at UMass Boston, he oversaw a large and complex operation that raised funds across seven colleges and 30 institutes and centers. Since he joined UMMS in 2007 as director of individual giving, he has played a leading role in some of the institution’s most high profile fundraising initiatives including the creation and stewardship of the UMass ALS Cellucci Fund.

He is a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross and the F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business at Babson College; he also served with distinction as an officer in the United States Navy.

“As we commit to raising significant funds in a capital campaign to support our important missions, we will look to John to structure our fundraising operations to attract top-notch talent; implement best practices; act entrepreneurially; develop a high performing culture; and partner more effectively with internal constituencies, as well as with those external constituencies and individuals whose generosity will be fundamental to our future success,” said Collins.

Prescott D. Stewart will join the development office in November from Harvard Business School, where he has served as senior director of principal gifts. Stewart’s work at Harvard over the past eight years has included a primary responsibility for securing major and principal gifts and a key role in the Harvard capital campaign. A graduate of Trinity College, he has had development and administrative roles at several prestigious institutions, including Trinity, the Dana Hall School, the University of Hawaii and the Salisbury School, prior to joining Harvard Business School in 2007.

“With John’s leadership experience and track record of accomplishment, together with Prescott’s campaign and major gifts expertise, I have tremendous confidence that a newly invigorated advancement function will successfully meet the challenges of raising funds, take advantage of emergent philanthropic opportunities, engage new audiences and connect with those who believe deeply in our mission, including alumni, faculty, foundations and benefactors,” said Collins.

In recognition of the broad range of activity associated with fundraising, engagement, stewardship and alumni relations, the development office will change its name to the Office of Advancement, effective Sept. 1.
