Barron Lerner, MD, PhD |
Physician and author Barron Lerner, MD, PhD, will be at UMass Medical School for a talk and book signing of his fifth and most recent book, The Good Doctor: A Father, a Son and the Evolution of Medical Ethics. The event is the latest intheMeet the Author Series sponsored by the Worcester District Medical Society and the Humanities in Medicine Committee of the Lamar Soutter Library.
Dr. Lerner is professor of medicine and population health at the New York University School of Medicine, where he conducts research, practices general internal medicine and teaches medical ethics and the history of medicine.
New York Times book reviewer Katie Hefner wrote that “The Good Doctor poses a fundamental riddle faced by every historian: How can we question the decisions and attitudes of our forebears without having experienced the contexts that shaped them? It makes for a particularly compelling discussion when the players are father and son, sharing as their lives’ work an ethically charged, ever-changing profession.”
Lerner has published extensively in scholarly journals and contributes essays to Slate, theatlantic.com and the print and online health pages of the New York Times. He has also appeared on numerous National Public Radio programs, including Fresh Air, All Things Considered and Science Friday. His book The Breast Cancer Wars: Hope, Fear and the Pursuit of a Cure in Twentieth-Century America, was named one of the 26 most notable books of 2001 by the American Library Association.
