First-year med students honor ‘first patients’ at Anatomical Gift Program Donor Memorial Service, reports boston.com.

First-year School of Medicine students expressed gratitude to the families of the Anatomical Gift Program donors at a May 9 memorial service at UMass Medical School, according to a story in boston.com.

Terence R. Flotte, MD, the Celia and Isaac Haidak Professor of Medical Education, executive deputy chancellor, provost and dean of the School of Medicine, said the donors are the students’ “first patients.”

“I doubt I will ever have a patient who believes in me more,” Yevin Roh, a member of the class of 2018, told boston.com.

The ceremony, held each year and organized by first-year medical students, pays tribute to the anatomical donors whose cadavers were used by the students in their anatomy class. The families of the more than 130 donors were recognized.

Corinne Ainsworth, a member of the class of 2018, was the lead organizer for Saturday’s service. She told boston.com that students form an “intangible connection” with the donors during their studies that is “really hard to describe.”
