Yunsheng Ma’s study featured in Medscape Medical News

Study links depression in postmenopausal women with diabetes and cardiovascular disease

ma-yunshengYunsheng Ma, PhD, MD, MPH, was interviewed by Medscape Medical News on June 20 about his recent study that found a link between postmenopausal women who use antidepressant medication or suffer from depression and an increased risk for diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The UMMS study, led by Dr. Ma, who is associate professor of medicine in the Division of Behavioral and Preventive Medicine, looked at whether elevated depressive symptoms and antidepressant use are associated with biomarkers for glucose dysregulation and inflammation, BMI and waist circumference.

"Weight gain in the abdominal region is a huge risk factor and a very important predictor of [cardiovascular disease]," said Ma. “Identifying these markers in women is important for diabetes and cardiovascular disease prevention."

The study was published in the June 13 issue of the American Journal of Public Health.
