After graduating 54 percent of its 2013 class into primary care-related residencies on June 2, the School of Medicine at UMass Medical School was recognized in a Worcester Telegram and Gazette editorial—called “Delivering the doctors”—for being part of the solution to the primary care doctor shortage. In this Expert’s Corner video, Robert Baldor, MD, vice chair and professor of family medicine & community health, explains how UMMS fulfills its mission of increasing the number of primary care physicians in Massachusetts.
“A unique aspect of the curriculum is the Longitudinal Preceptorship Program that right from the first couple of weeks of medical school places students in primary care offices for an afternoon twice a month,” Dr. Baldor said. “Students are in the middle of learning the basic sciences, but they are right in there understanding and appreciating and seeing primary care physician role models.”
