Vincent Minichiello, second from right, spoke to Charter TV 3 about his Match Day hopes.

The jubilant shrieks of excitement as fourth-year UMass Medical School students ripped open their residency envelopes on Match Day were heard from Boston to Springfield Friday, as journalists from the Boston Globe, the Worcester Telegram, Charter TV 3, New England Cable News and the Republican of Springfield covered the event in words, photographs and video.

“You have no idea how happy I am right now,” UMMS student Jesse Columbo told the Republican, after learning he landed his top choice, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center for vascular surgery. “This is a culmination of everything I’ve been working for; exactly what I wanted to do, exactly where I wanted to do it; I couldn’t be happier.”

One hundred and twenty-one UMMS graduating medical students—along with throngs of their families and friends—gathered in the Albert Sherman Center for the event. Fourth-year students across the country assemble on the same day at the same time to open envelopes revealing where they will spend their residencies, determined by the National Resident Matching Program.
