New England Cable News featured the Thursday, Nov. 8, announcement of a new collaboration among UMass Medical School, the Massachusetts National Guard and the Massachusetts Department of Veterans’ Services to help increase resiliency and prevent suicide among Massachusetts National Guard members.
As the military has increasingly relied on members of the National Guard, many of whom have faced multiple deployments to combat zones over the last 11 years, the incidents of mental and behavioral health issues—particularly suicides—have increased. Seeking to address the unique health care needs of National Guard personnel, the newly formed partnership seeks to implement suicide prevention strategies specifically designed for military personnel.
Speaking to reporter Michael Cronin, Chancellor Michael R. Collins said, “We're going to work together with our Department of Psychiatry and other elements within the Medical School to study the issue and see if it's possible for us to help provide care for those who are affected by the service in the military.”
