Expert’s Corner: Broadhurst against marijuana initiative

James Broadhurst, MD, assistant professor of family medicine & community health, is actively campaigning against the Nov. 6 state ballot initiative that asks voters to legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes. Dr. Broadhurst, chairman of the state No on Question 3 Committee, said the proposed legislation is fraught with troubling issues, including the absence of government oversight to ensure consumer safety.

“The fundamental issue is that marijuana as a crude plant extract is not medicine,” Broadhurst said. “It is a collection of between 60 and 80 cannabinoids and well into the hundreds of other compounds.”
