Members of the UMMS community are invited to the poster presentations and closing ceremony for the 2012 class of the Summer Undergraduate Research (SUR) program. This year marks the program’s 20th anniversary.
Giving the keynote address at the closing ceremony will be world-renowned immunologist Richard Goldsby, PhD, professor of biology emeritus at Amherst College and adjunct professor of veterinary and animal sciences at UMass Amherst. He is also a member of the scientific advisory board of the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, which has provided major support to the research enterprise at UMMS.
The Summer Undergraduate Research Program is designed to diversify the pool of biomedical researchers by providing structured, hands-on laboratory research experiences to undergraduate students, especially those from backgrounds under-represented in the field, or who are economically or educationally disadvantaged. Funding is provided by either the National Institutes of Health or the UMMS Office of Research.
“Please come to meet, greet and view scientific posters by the 34 undergraduates, selected from more than 600 applicants, from colleges and universities throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam, who have been largely unseen as they have been studying hard and working in laboratories all across our campus for the past 10 weeks,” said Deborah Harmon Hines, PhD, professor of cell and developmental biology, vice provost for school services and co-founder of SUR.
The posters will be on display in the old Medical School Lobby on Thursday, Aug. 2, from 1 to 4 p.m.; closing ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 3, in Amphitheathre III. Both events are free and open to the public.
