April Inniss, MD, SOM ’09, has been named a 2012 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Clinical Scholar. Dr. Inniss, who joins more than 1,100 physicians, scholars and health policy experts who have held RWJR fellowships, will begin her fellowship in the fall of 2012 at the University of Michigan.

While a student at UMMS, Inniss was the recipient of a prestigious Minority Scholars Award from the American Medical Association Foundation. Each year, only 10 medical students nationwide receive the award, which recognizes excellence in medical students and outstanding promise for a future career in medicine.

Inniss, a Boston native, has set her sights on improving health care in urban environments. From personal experience and as a volunteer for the Boston Public Health Commission’s Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health 2010 Program, she observed racial and ethnic disparities in health care and became dedicated to making a difference. She graduated from Brown University in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in urban studies, which combined her interests in medicine, health disparities and urban affairs. While attending Brown, Inniss also worked with neighbors in Mattapan to spearhead two health initiatives: The Children’s Project, aimed at good nutrition; and The Mattapan Walking Club.
