Julia Andrieni, MD, FACP, associate professor of medicine, has been named the new Joy McCann Professor for Women in Medicine. Dr. Andrieni will hold the professorship until 2014.
Established in 2005 by an endowment from the Joy McCann Foundation, the three-year professorship identifies and rewards female faculty leaders in medical education, research, patient care and community service. Previous recipients of the professorship are Linda F. Weinreb, MD, professor of family medicine & community health and pediatrics, and Patricia Franklin, MD, MBA, MPH, associate professor of orthopedics & physical rehabilitation.
“Through her many career achievements and mentoring abilities, Dr. Andrieni embodies all of the values that the Joy McCann Professorship wishes to be reflected in its recipients,” said Chancellor Michael F. Collins. “She has demonstrated a particular commitment to and talent for mentoring women as they navigate careers in medicine and leadership tracks in an institution.”
Andrieni is a recent graduate of the yearlong Drexel University College of Medicine Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Fellowship Program and attended the AAMC Mid-Career Development Program. She said both of these programs have significantly impacted her development and contributed to her vision for the Joy McCann Professorship, which is to increase the visibility of women in leadership roles.
Andrieni sees the professorship as an opportunity to create an innovative mentoring framework called “REACT NOW” (Researchers, Educators, Administrators, Clinicians and Trainees Network of Women). Among other innovations included in the initiative, REACT NOW will encompass an identified continuum of mentors across departments and divisions at every stage of career development, from medical student to dean, who can connect through a mentoring network and share stories of successful experiences. The REACT NOW initiative includes a website with a collection of mentoring programs as resources for women. Additionally, an annual web‐based survey will identify gender‐related career obstacles and challenges. Andrieni envisions that the REACT NOW initiative will extend beyond the campus borders to help address some specific needs for women in the Worcester community.
As the Joy McCann Professor, Andrieni will continue to serve as an active member of the Women’s Faculty Committee and the Women’s Leadership Work Group, and report annually on progress to the Women’s Faculty Committee and to the Joy McCann Professorship Program.
Andrieni will be recognized at the faculty luncheon on Tuesday, May 24, in the Faculty Conference Room.
