Pasquale to receive alumni award from UMass Lowell

Susan J. Pasquale, PhD, associate professor of family medicine & community health and director of curriculum & faculty development in the Office of Faculty Affairs, was named the 2010 recipient of UMass Lowell’s Francis Cabot Lowell Alumni Award for Service to the University. Dr. Pasquale will be honored for her contributions to the vitality of the UMass Lowell Alumni Association through her long-time leadership of the Alumni Relations Council and her continuing role as a member of both the College of Sciences Science Advisory Board and the Chancellor’s External Advisory Board.
Pasquale received her undergraduate degree in music from UMass Lowell (then Lowell State College) in 1975; her master’s in music from the University of Miami in 1978; and her doctorate in education administration from University of Connecticut in 1990. The Francis Cabot Lowell Alumni Awards are given annually to individuals who best honor the values and accomplishments of the city of Lowell’s namesake.
"We are so pleased to have this opportunity to honor Susan for the outstanding work she has done at UMass Lowell, beginning with her time as a student when she served as president of her class,” said Diane Earl, special assistant to the vice chancellor of university advancement and former director of Alumni Relations. “Susan served tirelessly as the chair of the Alumni Relations Council for more than five years, from 2001 through 2006, where she worked to revamp the mission and by-laws and strengthened the program of volunteers. Under her chairmanship, the Council truly became an active and very vital force within the alumni community. She continues to serve as a fully engaged member of both the Science Advisory Board and the Chancellor's External Advisory Board."
As a member of the UMass Lowell Chancellor’s External Advisory Board, Pasquale works with UML leadership in support of the goals established in the University’s strategic plan, by contributing to implementation plans or sharing expertise. Similarly, as a member of the Science Advisory Board, Pasquale provides guidance on matters of importance to the College of Sciences, either through her own expertise or by facilitating scientific or scholarly collaborations across the UML and UMMS campuses. She also serves as an informal ambassador by making herself available to UML students who are interested in learning more about UMMS.
“I’m very honored to receive this award in recognition of work that I’m so passionate about,” said Pasquale. “It’s a privilege to serve with such accomplished professionals who are all committed to the strategic goals of the University.”
Pasquale’s passion for UML as an alumna is a continuation of her involvement as a student. While an undergraduate, she served as president of her class and as a student representative on the committee for the merger of Lowell State College and Lowell Technological Institute. As an outgrowth of her passion for both her profession and UML, Pasquale, with her husband, Ron Boudreau, established an endowment fund to support faculty as they explore and develop innovative teaching methods or approaches. The Faculty Award for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning in the Sciences is awarded to Lowell faculty who have demonstrated exemplary teaching that has meaningfully improved how students learn in the sciences.
The Francis Cabot Lowell Alumni Awards will be presented at a gala on Nov. 18 at UMass Lowell. For additional information, or to purchase tickets, visit http://www.uml.edu/advancement/enews_layout_3_47887_191056.html. All money raised from the event supports the UML Honors Program.
