Presentation on the art of living and healing to be held at UMMS

A lecture by Bernie S. Siegel, MD, a renowned physician, lecturer and author of the national best seller Love, Medicine & Miracles, will be presented on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at 6 p.m. in the Hiatt Auditorium, Goff S1-608. In the lecture, “Reflections on the Art of Living and Healing,” Dr. Siegel will share what he has learned from more than 30 years of counseling cancer patients—that our medical society largely focuses on what goes wrong, often ignoring cases of great recovery against all odds. Siegel, who retired in 1986 from the department of surgery at Yale University in order to devote himself to speaking to patients and their caregivers, will also discuss the role of love, humor, hope, spirituality, desire and intention in survival behavior. He asks that attendees “bring a drawing of themselves working as a doctor or nurse.”

The interplay of mind and body memories, thoughts and feelings and their role in life and health will also be discussed.

Siegel appears at UMass Medical School on behalf of the Complementary and Alternative Medicine elective, the Psychiatry Interest Group and the student/faculty group JewMass.
