In this month’s Chair’s Spotlight, we highlight the work of Alvaro Alonso, MD, MSCR, RPVI, FSVM, Medical Director of the Anticoagulation Center of Excellence, Associate Director of the Cardiovascular Interventions Fellowship Program, Associate Professor of Medicine, and Clinician in Cardiovascular Medicine in the Department of Medicine.
Dr. Alonso specializes in vascular and endovascular medicine and interventional cardiology. He is currently the principal investigator of the ACTIV-4a trial, an NIH Multicenter, Adaptive, Randomized Controlled Platform Trial of the Safety and Efficacy of Antithrombotic and Additional Strategies in Hospitalized Adults with COVID-19 (with some results published in the NEJM and JAMA) and currently randomizing patients to Crizanlizumab or SGLT2 inhibitors. He is also an investigator of the Pulmonary Embolism Response Team PERT COVID-19 Registry. Dr. Alonso has published numerous manuscripts and book chapters and was the main author of a Peripheral Vascular Disease textbook.
Dr. Alonso’s dedication to his work and patients, along with his collaborative efforts with other care teams, is evident from the recognitions that have been bestowed upon him. Most recently, he was honored at the May Medical Center Leadership Meeting with the UMass Memorial May 2022 Safety Award, for helping to prevent an unnecessary procedure for a patient and going above and beyond to provide exceptional patient care. He was also recognized in a previous team spotlight for the outstanding care that was provided to three patients presenting with medical emergencies inside a short period of time on an evening in late fall 2021. These are just two of the many examples of why we are so proud to have Dr. Alonso on our faculty!
Dr. Alonso received his medical degree from the Universidad Panamericana School of Medicine, in Mexico City, completed his Medicine residency at Tufts Medical Center, followed by fellowships in Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology at UMass Chan Medical School/UMass Memorial Medical Center, and by fellowships in Vascular Medicine and Endovascular Interventions at Tufts University/St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center. He then joined the faculty at Tulane University’s Heart and Vascular Institute, where he was Associate Director of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program, established amputation prevention programs and the operations of the Heart and Vascular Service Line at University Medical Center, New Orleans. Dr. Alonso was awarded a Career Development Award by the LA CaTS (Louisiana Clinical and Translational Science Center), which also helped him complete his Master’s in Science in Clinical Research from Tulane University. Dr. Alonso joined the faculty at UMass Chan in 2016.
We are grateful for Dr. Alonso’s contributions to the Department of Medicine and for his ongoing commitment to excellence in the care of his patients.
