Dear Colleagues,
After a hot and humid August, signs of autumn are beginning to emerge with cooler evenings, the first sprinkle of oranges and reds in the north county maples, and our campus is once again bustling with new and returning students and trainees. This month, we have several events of note, including our first Medical Grand Rounds of the academic year on September 8th and the DoM Town Hall Meeting on September 26th, both featuring Dean Flotte, as well as a DoM Research Faculty Meeting on September 27th. We encourage you to participate in these events!
Over the last month, we have had many exciting faculty and staff accomplishments that I would like to highlight. I am thrilled to share that the T.H. Chan School of Medicine has been awarded a 2023 ACG Edgar Achkar Visiting Professorship. Krunal Patel, MD, of the Division of Gastroenterology was instrumental to this success. Members of the Program in Digital Medicine had their study published on the development of an artificial intelligence technique capable of analyzing video data from cholangioscopy probes with the purpose of improving the diagnosis of biliary tract cancers, and the Internal Medicine (IM) Residency Wellness Program received a CXO Wellness Grant from UMMH, to support the mental health and well-being of IM residents. A special shoutout to our amazing Palliative Care and Geriatric Medicine faculty members, who appeared in Worcester Medicine Magazine earlier this summer, and to Ann Marshak-Rothstein, PhD, of the Division of Rheumatology, who was featured in a "Pillars of Immunology" commentary in the Journal of Immunology. Off campus, our colleagues were busy battling a heatwave that proved to be no match for their determination to participate in this year’s Pan-Mass Challenge.
Be sure to check out this month’s Chair’s Spotlight which highlights the work of Fiachra Humphries, PhD of the Division of Innate Immunity. Dr. Humphries’ research focuses on how post-translational modifications regulate innate immune signaling and the progression of inflammatory disease. Dr. Humphries joined the faculty in the DoM this past spring and we are happy to feature his accomplishments as he has hit the ground running!
All of these stories, faculty honors, awards, grants, and more are highlighted below.
Sincerely,
Dave
