Dear Colleagues,
March has arrived and we are deep into unpacking our goals for the year. Throughout this year in my monthly message, I will highlight the work we are doing to achieve goals and objectives for our department, and summarize our successes and where challenges persist. This month, I have described some of the ways in which we will be working to elevate our educational initiatives, specifically our fellowships. You will also read about Dr. Mara Meyer Epstein of the Division of Health Systems Science, who is featured as the Chair’s Spotlight for the month of March.
Raising the profile of our fellowships| Under the leadership of Dr. PY Fan, vice chair for education, and in collaboration with our DoM communications team, we have launched an initiative to support and elevate the profile of our fellowships in the Department of Medicine. The goal is to create consistent and engaging messaging across all our fellowships, and verify program recruitment materials and website content are current. Much work has already been completed with the dedicated work of our program directors and recent updates to many of our websites, but this initiative will help ensure that content remains up-to-date and relevant, and gives prospective fellows the best possible preview of what a fellowship in the Department of Medicine at UMass looks like. The communications team will work closely with the fellowship program directors and administrators to enhance and elevate our programs for recruitment purposes and hopefully have a positive impact on our ability to broaden our reach while continuing to recruit top-notch fellows to our programs.
March Chair’s Spotlight| In this month’s Chair’s Spotlight, we feature Dr. Mara Meyer Epstein, associate professor in the Division of Health Systems Science. Dr. Epstein is a cancer epidemiologist with research interests in hematological cancers and developing methods to facilitate the use of large electronic health datasets for cancer epidemiological studies. She is also interested in the study of cancer screening and prevention, and has a background in molecular and nutritional epidemiology. Her expertise is in the analysis of data from various sources including survey, registry, electronic health record, and claims-based datasets. Dr. Meyer Epstein’s work as an epidemiologist is a prime example of the wide-ranging, and inter- and cross-departmental projects that our investigators are engaged in, and we are grateful for her contributions to the DoM. Ultimately, whether it is through our educational, clinical, or research domains, or diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives that span across all enterprises, our core values are patient-centered and incorporate collaborative, team-based, and innovative approaches that inform all that we do. I remain deeply appreciative of the commitment that members of our department exhibit on a daily basis to work towards our common goals and uphold these values.
Stay tuned for more updates on how we are working toward achieving our collective goals for 2023 and beyond!
Sincerely,
Dave
