Dear Colleagues,
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. In the spirit of Thanksgiving and as we approach the end of 2023, I would like to extend my gratitude to all of you who work so incredibly hard each and every day. I hear about your dedication in the clinic and on our inpatient floors through your patients’ and colleagues’ emails, letters, and conversations. I see your commitment to our community in the photographs of our trainees, faculty, and staff organizing food drives, and participating in health fairs and other events. I read about your enthusiasm for science, investigation, innovation, and discovery in the news, in scientific publications, and in your social media posts. There is much to be proud of and celebrate! As a token of our appreciation, on behalf of the Department of Medicine leadership team, I invite you to celebrate the season at the Department of Medicine’s holiday party on Wednesday, December 13, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Faculty Conference Room. Please join us so that we may enjoy hors d'oeuvres, drinks, and lively conversation with our colleagues and friends. We look forward to seeing you there! RSVP.
This month, I am also pleased to highlight Dr. Terrell Johnson, a physician in General Internal Medicine and our new co-director of Diversity, Inclusion and Social Justice in the Department of Medicine. He joined UMass Chan Medical School/UMass Memorial Health this past August and has enthusiastically dived into a variety of activities across Medicine’s mission areas. We recently spoke with Dr. Johnson to learn more about what led him to become a physician, what his hopes are as he embarks on a new chapter of his career at UMass, and why addressing the importance of diversity and equity in medicine is of critical importance. Read Dr. Johnson’s feature.
Finally, please save the date for a few important upcoming events! We will have our Winter Department of Medicine Town Hall on Monday, January 22 at noon. More details and the agenda will be sent in early 2024. Additionally, please join us for a retirement celebration in honor of Dr. Jeffrey Stoff, chief of Renal Medicine, on Thursday, February 1 from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. Along with Chancellor Collins and Dean Flotte, I will give opening remarks in honor of Dr. Stoff. RSVP.
I wish you all a happy and safe holiday season.
Sincerely,
Dave
