Monthly Spotlight: IT Impact Award

On September 13th, 2018, Andover, North Andover, and Lawrence Massachusetts were tragically affected by a pipeline disaster causing devastation to the area. In the midst of this tragedy, Commonwealth Medicine was asked to assist the Greater Lawrence Disaster Relief Fund to create a web-based application for eligible families and individuals to apply for relief funds.
A team comprised of UMMS IT staff and CWM staff put together a form and submission process in AWS and other tools. In the course of less than two weeks this combined team created a web form in the AWS Cloud environment that could support high volume activity and which in the first 2 days received over 65,000 hits and 4,800 applications submissions.
Eligible applicants will receive financial support from the fund and its charitable donors. The application is leveraging AWS’ geographical application pool functionality that enables us to restrict access within the US as an extra means of security. The team’s ability to come together quickly and respond to an imminent need is a testament to what can be done using the right tools and with a high degree of collaboration.
A big shout out to the team!
