Welcome to the Primary Care Residency Track

Welcome to the University of Massachusetts Internal Medicine Primary Care Residency Program! We are happy you are interested in our innovative program and hope you will find our website interesting and informative.

The University of Massachusetts School of Medicine was founded with the mission to advance the health and well-being of the people of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Our medical school is consistently ranked by US News and World Report as one of the nation’s best Primary Care Medical Schools. We are delighted to bring that level of excellence in Medical Training to Internal Medicine Residents.

What makes us different? Our residents will be on a 3+2 scheduling system.  They will have their primary continuity clinic at the Benedict Adult Primary Care Clinic on the campus of the University of Massachusetts. Our clinic has a staff of 25 attendings, 7 Advanced Practitioners, and 35 residents, who care for a socioeconomically, racially, culturally and linguistically diverse panel of almost 20,000 patients.  During internship, our residents will be allowed to choose a second primary care clinic site to align with their personal career interests. With additional required ambulatory rotations, our residents will spend between 50-60% of their training time in the ambulatory setting.  We will incorporate  longitudinal curriculum in Leadership, Medical Education, Quality Improvement and Scholarship. Finally, to insure the success of each learner, personal mentorship will be a core component of our program. We have an experienced team of passionate core faculty ready to train and mentor our residents!

The mission of our program is to develop well-rounded physicians, who are prepared to deliver the finest patient-centered primary care in academic or community settings, and whom possess the necessary skills to adapt and evolve in the dynamic field of medicine.  By augmenting a strong foundation in clinical medicine with robust training in Leadership, Medical Education, Quality Improvement, and Scholarship, our graduates will be well-prepared for many possible post-residency careers.

Growing out of our well-established Primary Care Leadership Pathway, our new program will afford residents the unique opportunity to help shape our curriculum and experiences as we build and evolve. We are a separate track within the UMass Internal Medicine Residency Program and have a separate NRMP Match number, which is 3050140M0.

Choosing your future residency program is a big decision.  You should be in a place where you are professionally and personally happy, so you can learn, thrive, and reach your greatest potential. Thanks for giving us a look! We hope you find our program has what you are looking for in the next step in your medical training.

Best wishes,
