Mary Munson, Ph.D. (She/Her)

Dr. Mary Munson has been working hard to foster diversity, inclusion and equity for students, postdocs, and junior faculty from backgrounds that are under-represented in medicine (URiM). She has been honored by several UMass Chan graduate school awards for curriculum development and student mentoring, and most recently, the 2022 Chancellor's Award for Advancing Institutional Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion. She was also recently elected as an ASCB Fellow

She is currently the faculty advisor for the UMass Chan student SACNAS chapter (2020-present). In 2019, she co-organized the Diversity Action Committee in her department, and is the organizer and Chair of the Faculty Focused on Inclusive Excellence (FFIE) Committee in the Morningside Graduate School for Biomedical Science. She is also a co-lead for UMass Chan’s Investigator Career Advancement Program (iCAP). Nationally, she is co-Chair of the ASCB Women in Cell Biology Committee (WICB), and in 2020, she became a co-Investigator on the ASCB-AMP MOSAIC Program’s UE5 NIH grant (1UE5GM139190-01) to support and mentor cohorts of new K99/R00 scholars for the postdoc to research-intensive university transition.

The Munson lab uses a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to obtain critical insights into the molecular basis for the spatial and temporal regulation of vesicular trafficking and membrane fusion in both exocytosis and endocytosis, including a collaborative mouse model for severe congenital neutropenia with dysfunctional immune cells.
