About Our Residency Programs

UMass Chan Medical School offers well balanced residency programs in all specialties. Here, you will complete the requirements for specialty board certification, develop professionally for careers in a changing health care delivery environment and provide progressively responsible clinical care under expert faculty supervision. Abundant basic science and clinical research opportunities are also available.

UMass Chan has attained a distinguished record in its relatively short history: the Medical School is ranked among the top ten percent nationally in primary care among LCME and Osteopathic accredited medical schools by U.S. News & World Report. UMass Chan attracts more than $240 million annually in research funding, placing it among the top 50 medical schools in the nation. Our clinical partner, UMass Memorial Health, is the region’s center for tertiary and quaternary care, providing a network of community health centers and primary care practices.

    Anesthesiology

    The mission of the Anesthesiology Residency Program is to train and graduate excellent clinicians with a strong skill set in all key areas of perioperative medicine. We provide an educational framework for the successful planning and execution of scholarly work in the areas of education, quality and patient safety, and clinical research to ensure trainees have the skills to become effective educators in any environment in which they practice. Our learning environment fosters engagement in community service and global health, and emphasizes diversity, equality, transparency and fairness, with an emphasis on wellness as a core foundation of professional satisfaction and fulfillment.

    Combined Neuropsychiatry

    The mission of the Combined Neuropsychiatry Residency Program is to educate and train residents to be knowledgeable in the correlation of brain function and behavior, informed in the broad range of neurobiological, neurological, psychotherapeutic, social, cultural and rehabilitative perspectives and who are able to serve each department as a resource in the complementary field.  We are dedicated to the training of psychiatrist/neurologists skilled at the management of high levels of neurological and psychiatric comorbidity, who serve their community by engaging in research and providing compassionate, person- and family-driven, trauma-informed, recovery-focused, respectful care and advocacy for those in need of neuropsychiatric and mental health services.

    Family Medicine: Fitchburg

    The UMass HealthAlliance Fitchburg Family Medicine Residency Program is committed to the process of educating and training allopathic and osteopathic physicians to provide comprehensive, evidence-based, compassionate, patient-centered primary medical care to people in all stages of their lives, with a special emphasis on those who are medically underserved and experiencing a wide range of physical and behavioral health needs. Resident physicians are trained to provide this care in the context of the patients' backgrounds, families and communities, utilizing an interdisciplinary, team-based approach, and partnering whenever possible with our community resources. The program provides a supportive, scholarly and collegial environment that also encourages residents to acknowledge their own wellness and self-care needs.

    Operating in an interdisciplinary team-based learning environment with strong institutional commitment to family medicine and primary care, the Family Medicine Residency Program trains physician leaders to provide clinically competent, patient-centered, community-aware health services to diverse populations in diverse settings.

    Integrated and Independent Interventional Radiology

    The mission of the Integrated and Independent Interventional Radiology Residency Programs is to educate and train knowledgeable, skillful and innovative interventional radiologists. Residents receive excellent clinical training in diagnostic and interventional radiology and learn to provide compassionate patient care, while also participating in a variety of interventional radiology research opportunities that are available.

    Internal Medicine

    The mission of the Internal Medicine Residency Program is to educate and train our residents to be well- rounded internists.  The program will prepare residents for careers as clinicians in primary care and hospital medicine, or for fellowships in medical subspecialties; and to be educators, researchers and administrators. We are committed to training that respects the diversity and experiences of our residents and our patient population. Our expectations are high and our academics are rigorous.  At each of our three teaching sites, learning takes place in a nurturing and supportive environment.     Internal Medicine Primary Care

    The mission of the Internal Medicine Primary Care Residency Program is to develop well-rounded physicians who will deliver the finest patient-centered primary care in diverse academic and community settings, and who possess the skills to adapt, evolve, and thrive in the dynamic field of internal medicine. In combining a strong foundation in clinical medicine with personalized mentorship and robust training in leadership, medical education, quality improvement, and scholarship, our graduates will be well-prepared for many potential post-residency careers.

    The mission of the Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Program is to provide exceptional education and training in a supportive environment that is challenging yet enjoyable, and always humanistic.  We ensure that our residents are comfortable practicing primary care in any setting and are poised to pursue further training in any subspecialty of pediatrics or internal medicine.  Trainees in the program will become leaders in advocating for socially responsible health care of individuals, families and communities.

    The Neurological Surgery Residency Program is designed to provide each resident with comprehensive training in neurological surgery while also equipping him/her with the skills needed to become a successful scientific investigator or educator in neurological surgery. We are committed to training the next generation of neurosurgeon-scientists, educators and leaders in the field of neurological surgery.

    The Neurology Residency Program aims to provide excellent educational and clinical neurology training. Our residents focus on research in the field of neuroscience and neurology, and we place a strong emphasis on providing humanistic compassionate care to the Central Massachusetts community and larger New England area.

    The mission of the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program is to produce outstanding orthopedic surgeons who provide compassionate, appropriate and effective care, are engaged members of the Central Massachusetts community who are dedicated to life-long learning.

    Otolaryngology

    The mission of the Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Residency Program is to train future surgeons to provide compassionate and comprehensive patient care. The educational goals, research and patient experience within the training program will provide an exemplary education for trainees. Ultimately, it will produce well-rounded, competent and caring surgeons who will contribute to the field of otolaryngology - head and neck surgery, and medicine, as a whole.

    Pathology

    The mission of the Pathology Residency Program is to educate and train our residents to become competent, independently practicing pathologists and prepare them for careers in an academic institution or a large community hospital setting. The program gives residents a broad clinical experience in all aspects of anatomic and clinical pathology at a large academic tertiary medical center as well as at a large commercial laboratory.  Our program aims to provide a unique learning opportunity for residents to be exposed to a large volume of pathology specimens, clinical research opportunities and private laboratory management experience.

    The mission of the Integrated Plastic Surgery Residency Program is to produce fully competent, compassionate and resilient plastic surgeons who additionally have the capability to be educators, academicians and leaders in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Our program allows plastic surgeons to achieve their career goals in a supportive, scholarly and collegial environment while providing outstanding care to our diverse population in Central Massachusetts.

    The mission of the Preventive Medicine Residency Program is to train physician leaders to advance the tenets of health promotion and disease prevention for all, through evidence-based contributions to preventive medicine, community medicine, public health, implementation science, academic medicine, health policy, and social justice in our local community, our Commonwealth, our country, and our world.

    The mission of the Radiology/Diagnostic Residency Program is to educate and train knowledgeable, compassionate and innovative radiologists. Residents receive excellent clinical training in diagnostic and interventional radiology and learn to provide compassionate patient care, while also participating in a variety of radiology research opportunities that are available.

Its mission aligns with the missions of UMass Chan Medical School and UMass Memorial Health Care.

  • Urology →

    Urology

    The Urology Residency Program is a premier program that provides excellent comprehensive educational and clinical training in all aspects of urology. The program fosters faculty and trainee enthusiasm for discovery and service. The clinical expertise of the faculty instructs residents in the diagnosis and management of common and complex urologic disease. We provide opportunities for resident involvement alongside our faculty in laboratory, translational and clinical investigation, offering our trainees a broad exposure to basic and clinical research.

    Vascular Surgery

    The mission of the Vascular Surgery Residency Program is to provide the necessary educational and clinical experiences to ensure that all graduates are prepared to be leaders in vascular care, in any type of practice setting. The program aims to provide trainees with an extensive case volume and excellent training in both open and endovascular techniques, and ample opportunities for research, within a friendly and respectful work environment.
