About our Division
We are a Division active in patient care, patient-oriented research, teaching, and administrative and scholarly activities. Our clinical activities include numerous clinic sessions carried out each week by our physicians and nurses. Dr Herbert Bonkovsky has stepped down as Director of the Division, but continues his special interest in acute and chronic liver disease, and directs and provides a considerable portion of the staff of the Liver-Pancreatic-Biliary Center of UMass Memorial Health Care which he founded shortly after his arrival at UMass Medical Center in 1990. This Center has enjoyed growth in numbers of participants and activities, particularly as a result of the recruitment in 1996 of William C. Meyers, M.D., to chair the Department of Surgery at UMass Medical School and UMass Memorial Health Care and D. Eliezer Katz, the Surgical Director of Liver Transplantation. Dr. Meyers is a General Surgeon and is internationally renowned for his expertise.
Senior members of our Division direct UMass Memorial Clinics in Digestive Disease and Nutrition (Dr. John Zawacki) the GI Endoscopy Unit (Dr Wahid Wassif), the Adult Nutrition Support Service of UMASS Medical School (Dr. Dominic Nompleggi), The Center for Study for Disorders of Iron Porphyrin Metabolism (Dr. Herbert Bonkovsky), and the Liver Transplant Service (Dr. Savant Mehta). Dr. Raymond Koff, a renowned hepatologist and educator, has also joined our division.
