Renal Fellowship

The Division of Renal Medicine of the UMass Chan Medical School has offered subspecialty training in nephrology for over 30 years. The programs graduates have had an outstanding level of professional success both as community-based renal clinicians, as well as academic nephrologists. 

Three fellowship slots are offered each year. While most trainees opt for a two-year training program, the option for a third year is available for those wishing to pursue research. The program also allows second-year fellows a chance to concentrate in clinical areas of particular interest to them, such as intensive care nephrology and transplantation. 

The UMass nephrology fellowship curriculum is taught in a variety of didactic and bedside venues. The program prides itself on affording a rich experience in all spheres of clinical nephrology: home and in-center dialysis, transplantation, outpatient care, inpatient consultation and renal biopsy. Meeting regularly with a dedicated nephropathologist, fellows develop a strong foundation in interpreting renal histopathology. Fellows also gain exposure to pediatric nephrology. In all of these activities, fellows are paired with experienced academic nephrologists. Faculty enthusiastically embrace their roles as mentors; many have been recipients of teaching awards from former fellows, students, residents, and colleagues. 

To be eligible, candidates must receive training in an ACGME-accredited internal medicine residency program and must be ABIM board-eligible or board-certified by the expected start of their fellowship.
