How to Apply to IR Residency Programs

Integrated Residency

You are a medical student or physician who has not completed a diagnostic radiology residency.

Independent Residency

You are a resident who has or will have completed a diagnostic radiology residency prior to starting IR residency.

Applying to the Integrated Interventional Radiology Residency

Integrated IR Residency Program applicants should apply using ERAS. Interviews are granted after review of the completed application including medical school transcripts, letters of recommendation, personal statement and USMLE scores. The education committee performs the interviews and the residency participates in the NRMP match.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants must be:
    • Graduates of U.S. or Canadian medical schools accredited by LCME;
    • Graduates of U.S. colleges of osteopathic medicine accredited by AOA;
    • Graduates of international medical schools with either valid ECFMG certificates or full unrestricted license to practice medicine in Massachusetts; or
    • Graduates of international medical schools who have completed a fifth pathway program by an LCME-accredited medical school.
  • Successful completion of USMLE step I
  • Completion of an internship year – a clinical year in a program accredited by ACGME or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in internal medicine, surgery, OB/GYN, neurology, family medicine, emergency medicine or transitional program with less than two months of elective in radiology
  • Eligibility for employment at UMass Memorial Medical Center and licensure in Massachusetts.

Applying to the Independent Interventional Radiology Residency

Independent IR Residency Program applicants should apply using ERAS. Interviews are granted after review of the completed application, personal statement, CV, three letters of recommendation and USMLE transcripts. An IR fellowship committee performs the interviews and the fellowship participates in the NRMP match.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants must be:
    • Graduates of U.S. or Canadian medical schools accredited by LCME
    • Graduates of U.S. colleges of osteopathic medicine accredited by AOA
    • Graduates of international medical schools with either valid ECFMG certificate or have full unrestricted license to practice medicine in Massachusetts or graduate of international medical schools and have completed
    • Or have completed a fifth pathway program by an LCME-accredited medical school
  • Completion of USMLE step I, II, and III
  • Completion of an internship year – a clinical year in a program accredited by ACGME or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in internal medicine, surgery, OB/GYN, neurology, family medicine, emergency medicine or transitional program with less than two months of elective in radiology
  • Eligibility for employment at UMass Memorial Medical Center and licensure in Massachusetts.
